Studied biology at the University of Bonn; from 1985 to 1988 study of microbiology, genetic engineering, and biochemistry at the University Marburg; greaduated in 1989. Doctoral thesis in 1991 at the University of Marburg, Institute for Medicinal Microbiology, within the framework of a cooperation project of the German Ministry of Research and Technology between the University of Marburg, the German Collection of Microorganisms and the German Federal Health Authority.
