Studied chemistry at Dublin City University (DCU) and Friedrich-Schiller Universität, Jena. Received Ph.D. from DCU (2003) after research in the area of coordination chemistry, in particular, exploring new synthetic routes to ruthenium polypyridyl complexes and their subsequent photo- and electrochemical characterisation. Research scientist at Daiichi Pure Chemicals, Ibaraki, Japan from 2003 to 2007, examining gene expression profiles in primary and immortalised hepatocytes treated with known and suspected hepatotoxic drugs and drug candidates.
