Hoffmann · Eitle Newsletter 05/2008 - The London Agreement: Reducing translation costs for European patents

Autor: Dr. Matthias Wolf and Matthew Birkett

The London Agreement (LA) relating to the application of Art. 65 EPC comes into force on May 1, 2008. It aims to reduce post-grant translation costs for European patents by requiring a state which is party to the LA to waive, entirely or in large part, the requirement to file a translation of the patent into an official language of the state. The LA may therefore significantly ease the financial burden of validating EP patents in states having an official language other than the language of the patent.
