Extensive experience of opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office and rendering opinions, as well as prosecution of European, UK and foreign patent applications worldwide, mainly for leading international companies. Particular expertise across the mechanical and electrical fields, especially the upstream, petroleum and oil services industries, postage machines and paper handling equipment.

Career
Read engineering science at the University of Oxford (The Queen’s College), honours degree in 1971. Studies included thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, theory of structures, material sciences, control systems, electronics and electrical machines. After working in two patent attorney firms, joined Esso/Exxon in 1982, becoming Manager for Patents & Licences (Europe) for petroleum patent operations. Numerous working assignments in USA, including six months in 1987 in the Law Department of Exxon Research & Engineering Company. British Chartered Patent Attorney since 1976, European Patent Attorney since 1978. With Hoffmann · Eitle since 1993.
Personal Information
Married with two children. Leisure interests include entertaining and cooking, travel, traditional repair of vernacular buildings, antiques and classical music.
