Matthew Cassie is a partner in HOFFMANN EITLE's Electrical Engineering and Digital Technologies practice group. He has more than 20 years' experience in the patent profession, gained at a number of leading European patent firms, advising businesses ranging from technology start-ups and scale-ups to major multinational corporations.
Matthew's practice is centred on innovation and emerging technologies. He has particular experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning, software and computer-implemented inventions, telecommunications, photonics and optics, quantum technologies, electronics and other areas of advanced engineering.
A significant part of his work involves getting to grips with new and technically complex ideas at an early stage of their development. He has extensive experience of drafting patent applications for important innovations, developing international filing and prosecution strategies, and building and managing commercially focused patent portfolios.
Matthew also has substantial experience in contentious patent matters, including complex opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office and advising on patent validity and infringement. He is qualified to represent clients before the Unified Patent Court and has completed the CEIPI European Patent Litigation Certificate, complementing his extensive EPO contentious practice with specialist training in European patent litigation and UPC proceedings.
Matthew combines this technical and legal experience with a strong interest in the commercial role of intellectual property. Over his career he has built and developed successful patent practices and teams, established long-standing relationships with businesses and professional partners internationally, and contributed to the development of new services and approaches to delivering IP advice. He has also held senior management responsibilities relating to innovation, strategy and the development of professional-services businesses.
Before entering the patent profession, Matthew worked in commercial research and development, developing software and artificial-intelligence-based signal-processing systems and robotic control algorithms. He holds a First Class degree in Astrophysics from University College London and a Master's degree in Optics and Photonics from Imperial College London.
Matthew qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2008, winning the Gill Prize for the highest overall mark in the UK Final Professional Examinations. He has subsequently been recognised for many years as a recommended practitioner in the IAM Patent 1000.
