Jonas Smeets

Jonas is a partner in our Dusseldorf office. His practice focuses on counselling and representation in patent litigation, trade secrets litigation and other tech-related litigation before national courts and the Unified Patent Court (UPC). In particular, his expertise comprises litigating in the telecommunication and automotive sector regularly including standard essential patents (SEP/FRAND). Moreover, his expertise encompasses experiences in medical devices and biotech litigation. Further, Jonas regularly advises clients in investigations & trade secret theft matters including independent evidence proceedings and dawn raids to secure evidence.

Jonas’ thoughtful and thought through counselling style allows his clients to leverage their portfolio and maximize their chances in complex litigation scenarios.

Notwithstanding Jonas’ ability to effectively guide clients in managing risks and arriving at practical solutions without involving the courts. His wealth of experience in providing comprehensive freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses and representing clients in complex out-of-court negotiation scenarios is an asset.

JUVE has consecutively ranked Jonas as a ‘Recommended Individual’ for proceedings before the Unified Patent Court 2025/26 and has named him ‘One to Watch’ in Litigation (“outstanding”/“very good in FRAND”). Managing IP lists Jonas as IP Star - Rising Star 2025.

Already before joining us, Jonas was counsel in an international tier 1 law firm for more than six years.

Jonas is active in various professional organizations (GRUR, VPP, AIPPI) and is a regularly publishing author covering IP related topics. Recently, Jonas has contributed to the International Handbook of AI Law: A Guide to Understanding and Resolving the Legal Challenges of Artificial Intelligence. But also beyond his professional career, Jonas is socially committed as a coach and board member of a local sports club.
