HOFFMANN EITLE is pleased to announce that Matthew Cassie has joined the firm as a Partner in its Electrical Engineering and Digital Technologies practice group in London. With more than 20 years of experience in European patent practice, Matthew brings extensive expertise across a broad range of emerging technologies and complex patent matters.

Matthew has spent his career at leading UK and European patent firms. Most recently, he spent more than ten years at a large UK-based intellectual property firm, including eight years as a partner, where he built and led a substantial international patent practice and took on wider leadership responsibilities within the firm.

His practice encompasses a broad range of advanced technologies, with particular experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning, software, telecommunications, photonics and optics, quantum technologies and electronics. He has extensive experience in the drafting and prosecution of technically complex patent applications, strategic development and management of international patent portfolios, and opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office. He also advises on infringement, validity and patent disputes, holds the CEIPI European Patent Litigation Certificate and is qualified to represent clients before the Unified Patent Court.

Alongside his client practice, Matthew has substantial experience in building and developing patent practices and teams, establishing international client and professional relationships, and contributing to innovation, strategy and the development of professional-services businesses. Earlier in his career, he worked in commercial research and development, including developing artificial-intelligence-based signal-processing technology.

David Sproston commented:

“We are delighted to welcome Matthew to HOFFMANN EITLE. He brings an unusual combination of technical depth, extensive experience of European patent practice and a strong track record of developing practices and relationships internationally. His experience in areas including AI, quantum technologies, photonics, software and telecommunications fits extremely well with the continuing development of our high-tech practice and with the increasingly important role of patent attorneys in European patent disputes.”

Matthew holds a First Class degree in Astrophysics from University College London and a Master's degree in Optics and Photonics from Imperial College London. On qualifying as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2008, he was awarded the Gill Prize for achieving the highest overall mark in the UK Final Professional Examinations. He has subsequently been recognised for many years as a recommended practitioner in the IAM Patent 1000.

Matthew Cassie added:

“I've known HOFFMANN EITLE and many of its partners for a long time and have always regarded it as one of the outstanding European IP firms. The depth of technical expertise here, the quality of its European patent practice and the scale and international reach of the firm are exceptional. I'm very pleased to be joining such a strong group of people and excited about what we can build together.”

Matthew's arrival adds further depth to HOFFMANN EITLE's Electrical Engineering and Digital Technologies practice, while his experience in both private practice and commercial research and development brings a valuable perspective to his work with clients across a wide range of technology sectors.
