Sofie McPherson is a partner in HOFFMANN EITLE’S Electrical Engineering and Digital Technologies practice group. She advises clients on the development, protection, commercialisation and enforcement of intellectual property across a broad range of deep-tech and high-growth sectors, combining extensive private practice experience with valuable in-house insight gained at a global leader in telecommunications.
Sofie is recognised for her expertise at the convergence of life sciences and computing, where she works with innovators ranging from multinational corporations to venture-backed start-ups. Her practice encompasses artificial intelligence, digital health, bioinformatics and other deep-tech innovations, with particular experience in AI-driven technologies that analyse biomarker data—including microbiome, genomic, imaging, physiological and spectral data—for applications such as diagnosis, prognosis, patient stratification, treatment selection and drug discovery. Her experience also includes medical devices, brain-computer interfaces and advanced healthcare software, as well as telecommunications, IoT technologies, cybersecurity, blockchain, extended reality and standard essential patents.
A trusted adviser to start-ups, scale-ups and investors, Sofie works closely with businesses to develop intellectual property strategies that support growth, attract investment and create long-term commercial value. She has extensive experience helping companies build investment-ready patent portfolios, navigate due diligence processes, manage IP risk and align patent strategy with wider business objectives.
Sofie regularly handles complex and strategically important patent matters, including opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office and disputes before the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Her combination of technical depth, commercial awareness and contentious experience enables her to help clients maximise the value of innovation in rapidly evolving technology markets.
Outside of work, Sofie enjoys travelling, exploring new cultures and spending time outdoors with her family.
