Joining the patent profession in 2013, Richard Smith has gained expertise in mechanical engineering, and particularly in the fields of aircraft, oilfield devices and medical devices. Richard has further gained extensive experience in the field of software, in fields such as modelling and medical software. Richard works with a mix of clients, from small university spin-outs and start-ups, to corporations with large patent portfolios.
Richard’s day-to-day work includes patent drafting, prosecution, oppositions before the EPO and freedom to operate reports. He strives to consider the client’s individual needs in order to provide optimal protection for the client.
Before starting in the world of patents, Richard studied Physics at Oxford University. In his Master’s year, Richard specialised in condensed matter physics and laser physics.
In his personal time, Richard enjoys travelling and is always planning the next adventure.
