Silvia Bertran Valls

With over 15 years of experience as a patent professional within the field of life sciences, Silvia Bertran-Valls offers an interesting mixture of knowledge and abilities acquired both in-house and in private practice.
She first worked as in-house IP manager and patent specialist in small biotech firms and mid-pharma companies, both in Spain and abroad, which provided her with experience in establishing relationships and collaborating with the different stakeholders within a company. During this period, in addition to conduct typical patent attorney activities such as invention capturing, patent strategy definition, and global patent prosecution; she also collaborated in competitive intelligence activities, transactional matters and due diligence processes. From these experiences, she also acquired a direct communication style, aiming to convey patent matters in understandable terms to facilitate decision making.
On 2015, she moved to private practice as an already qualified European Patent Attorney by joining HOFFMANN EITLE ‘s biotechnology practice group. Her focus is on advising Spanish client’s represented by universities, research institutions, small biotech and mid-pharma companies. Although her work is quite diverse within the field of life sciences, she specializes in antibodies and vaccines, peptides and chimeric proteins, medical diagnosis, gene therapy, new medical targets, cell therapy and biomanufacturing. As part of her activities at HOFFMANN EITLE, she further conducts opinion work such as validity opinions, Freedom to operate analyses and infringement assessments. In 2020, she qualified as Patent & Trademark Spanish Attorney (“Agente de la Propiedad Industrial”).
Prior to working as a patent attorney, Silvia graduated as a pharmacist and completed a master’s in biotechnology from the University of Barcelona. She conducted her master’s research project in the field of microbiology at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, more specifically in the identification of new molecular targets involved in antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria.
Being born in Barcelona, Silvia is a passionate of the sea and you will likely find her at the Costa Brava in Girona. She likes nature, gastronomy and jazz music.
